Every number stays at 10 or below, with problems such as 4 + 5, 10 − 3 or 2 + 6. That covers the facts children need to know by heart before anything bigger: number bonds to 10 (7 + 3, 6 + 4), adding and taking away 1 or 2, and simple subtraction from 10. Because each answer is also a row number, the child has to read the result carefully and find the matching line, which quietly reinforces number order.
